Visit the refineries and oil wells, which can be seen from the road between Jalan Mylian and Balikpapan.
The first oil drilling in the region took place in 1897, and the Japanese seized the oil wells in January 1942 during the First Battle of Balikpapan. If you've never seen drilling, this could be your chance. Of course, you won't be allowed to get too close, or use your camera. Access is strictly forbidden to the public, but they can be seen from the road between Jalan Minyak and Balikpapan Bay.
