The Wain River primary forest lies to the north of Balikpapan. It is a conservation and research area with a wide variety of flora and fauna. It comprises three types of forest: the swamp forest, the dipterocarp forest with trees that can reach heights of 70 meters, and the riparian forest located along a watercourse. This wilderness is not (yet) protected, and there is no public transport to it. This forest is a natural habitat for orangutans, honey bears and honeyeaters.
