CASTLE RUSHEN
Castle Rushen is a remarkable 16th century medieval fortress, one of the best preserved in Europe. In the Middle Ages, it was here that the island's political theatre was performed. Later, it became a prison. Today, its many rooms are explored with delight, from the courtyard to the ramparts, where the surroundings offer admirable views. The tour begins with a video on the history of the building and continues with posters detailing the history of each corner. Reconstitutions with talking models also feature certain events, such as Bishop Wilson who translates a Bible text from English to Manx in his cell. During the high season, staff members provide information on different levels of the castle.
For more old stones and heritage, you can visit the ruins and museum of the Rushen Abbey, a 12th century Cistercian monastery, located in Mill Road, in the village of Ballasalla, on the Douglas Road (same hours, contacts and prices as Cregneash).
