MONASTERO DEL SACRO SPECO DI SAN BENEDETTO
Monastery with an upper church covered with frescoes of the XIV century in Subiaco.
Created in 529, the Benedictine Order follows the monastic rules of Saint Benedict of Nursia. The monastery, hung on the rock, was built where the holy founder lived as a hermit for three years. Supported by nine arches, it dates from the 13th and 14th centuries. The upper church is covered with 14th century frescoes. The Sacro Speco is the cave where Saint Benedict retired. In the chapel of San Gregorio, you can find the portrait of Saint Francis of Assisi, painted during his lifetime before 1224.
