Monastery with a remarkable library and an eleventh century bell tower in Subiaco.
The novitiate of St. Scholastica is the only one of the 12 monasteries created by St. Benedict in this valley to withstand both the Lombard invasions of the 9th century and the earthquakes of the late 12th. The oldest of the three cloisters dates from this period. The site is also famous for its library, which is overflowing with treasures - in all, more than 100,000 volumes from all eras. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public. The bell tower dates back to the 11th century.
