MONASTERO DI SANTA SCOLASTICA
Monastery with a remarkable library and an eleventh century bell tower in Subiaco.
The novitiate of St. Scholastica is the only one of the 12 monasteries created by St. Benedict in this valley which resisted both the Lombard invasions of the 9th century and the earthquakes of the late 12th century. Among the three cloisters, the oldest dates from this period. The place is also known for its library which is full of treasures, in all more than 100,000 volumes from all periods. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public. The bell tower dates from the 11th century.
