AQUARIUM DE BÉNI SAF
It's the pride of Béni Saf and its inhabitants, and for good reason: it's unique in Algeria. This experimental station for aquatic resources, more simply known as the aquarium, is primarily a scientific research facility, but also an educational and tourist attraction. It is also part of the Centre National de Recherche et de Développement de la Pêche et de l'Aquaculture d'Alger (CNRDPA). First opened in 1958, the building has an original, boat-shaped architecture, with portholes all along its façade. It was built with its feet in the water, under a high sandstone cliff, on the western edge of Béni Saf, not far from the port; one side faces the city, while the other faces the sea. The tower is reminiscent of a lighthouse. From its terrace, a lovely view of the coast and the Mediterranean awaits visitors. The establishment has just reopened its doors after a major refurbishment, undertaken on the initiative of manager Tarik Gheribi. If you'd like to take a look around, the staff will be happy to guide you through the aquariums to show you the hundred or so marine species kept here, as the structure aims to raise public awareness of the aquatic environment. The guided tour is free, but feel free to leave a generous tip to support the project and the upkeep of the tanks. You can keep up to date with the latest news on our Facebook page.
