THE KALÂA OF THE BENI HAMMAD
Famous for its Hispano-Moorish architecture, discover a minaret, a keep and the high walls of the Fanal palace.
The Kalâa was abandoned in 1090 and partially destroyed in 1152 by the Almohads. The minaret can still be admired from the Great Mosque. Standing 25 m high, it dominates the site. Its Hispano-Moorish architecture is reminiscent of Seville's Giralda or Marrakech's Koutoubia.
The keep and high walls of the Fanal Palace (Qasr el-Manâr) are also worth a look. The foundations of the Lake Palace (Dâr el-Bahr) bear witness to its composition (pavilions, gardens, rooms, baths and basins), characteristic of Hammadite art marked by luxury and refinement.
