This fort has functioned as a military garrison, territorial arsenal, and military supply depot for a long time
Fort Union was established in 1851 as the gatekeeper for the Santa Fe trade route. Over the next forty years, two more forts were built next door. Fort Union was the largest in the American Southwest. It functioned as a military garrison, territorial arsenal and military supply depot for a very long time. The site preserves Fort Union and the second fort, as well as the ruins of the third.
