CHICAGO PORTAGE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
The place that marks the western end of the portage used by explorer Louis Joliet and Father Jacques Marquette.
The Chicago Portage National Historic Site marks the western end of the portage used by explorer Louis Joliet and Father Jacques Marquette in 1863 when they discovered the Mississippi River. The portage crossed a half-mile stretch of Mud Lake, which could be wet, swampy, frozen or dry, depending on the season, and has since disappeared completely. In addition to a sculpture honoring the two men, the site includes several interpretive trails.
