INDIAN TERRITORY MEMORIAL
A simple stone memorial in Quapaw, commemorating the 20 displaced Amerindian tribes.
This memorial represented by a simple stone marker is installed on the right side of Route 66. It reminds us that in 1833, this land, which has since become Oklahoma, was ceded to more than 20 Native American tribes, most of whom were displaced during the Trail of Tears episode (1830-1850), until the discovery of rich zinc and lead mines in 1905. The nations mentioned here are the Quapaws, Senecas, Shawnees, Peorias, Miamis, Ottawas and Wyandots.
