FORT VERDE STATE PARK
Small park created in 1970 preserving parts of a fort, run by volunteers at Camp Verde.
This small state park maintained by volunteers preserves portions of a fort established in 1871 during the Apache Wars. The park was established in 1970 and has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The fort was never walled or palisaded, and never saw combat. At its peak, it consisted of twenty-two buildings, only four of which survived until 1956, when local citizens established a small museum in the administration building. In season, commemorations in period costumes are organized.
