CALICO GHOST TOWN
Recreation park in Calico with many mining related attractions with a short hike
Calico is an old mining town founded in 1881 and abandoned in 1898. Several silver mines were exploited in the vicinity during this period. It was the collapse of the price of the ore that caused the bankruptcy of the town. Calico was purchased in 1950 by Walter Knott, a farmer from the San Bernardino area, who restored most of the site to its original condition before bequeathing it to the county. Still managed by San Bernardino County, Calico has become a recreational park with many mining-related attractions.
