Bridge at the north end of the island, 1,600 m long, used as a set for the film by John Carpenter.
Chouteau Island (named after the co-founder of St. Louis) is located north of Madison, to which it belongs. The bridge is at the north end of the island and is accessible directly from Mitchell. It connects the two states of Mississippi (on the east) and Missouri (on the west). Opened in 1929, the Chains of Rocks Bridge became an official part of Route 66 in 1936. Its name comes from a series of rapids located upstream from the site on the Mississippi River, which stretch for about 30 kilometers. The bridge is located 1.6 km downstream from the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.
Closed to automobile traffic since 1968, the bridge is now crossed by a trail used daily by many hikers and cyclists. With a length of 1,600 meters, it has the particularity of having a 22° turn in its middle. Indeed, when its construction was already well advanced, it was realized that the bank where the structure was to be built was too unstable to accommodate it. To cope with this unforeseen situation, the engineers opted for a bend in order to touch the bank at a more suitable point. This particularity made it difficult for two semi-trailers to pass each other and was the cause of many accidents. In John Carpenter's futuristic film, New York 1997, shot in 1980, it is on this bridge that Kurt Russel, with his famous black eye patch, escapes while Adrienne Barbeau breathes her last.
