Located at the foot of the Margallas, the imposing and original Faisal Mosque is one of the capital's landmarks. It was built between 1976 and 1986 and largely financed by King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, to whom it owes its name. Designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay, the building represents a kind of nomad tent with eight sides "supported" by four minarets of nearly 90 meters. An urban legend tells that CIA agents came to inspect them at the time of construction, fearing that they were hidden missiles! Before visiting the mosque, remember to remove your shoes and cover your hair. Avoid prayer hours and Fridays.
