Rohtas Fort is a defensive complex built on the orders of Afghan leader Sher Shah Suri after his victory over the Mogul Emperor Humayun in 1541. Built on a high plain, protected to the east and north by the Kahan River and to the south and east by high hills, the garrison fort was never stormed. Its massive ramparts, built of stone, extend over more than 4 kilometres. The total enclosure includes 68 bastions with twelve massive and richly decorated doors. Over the centuries, the fort was occasionally built by the Moguls, then by the Pashtuns and Sikhs. UNESCO calls it "the most important surviving example of the beginnings of Muslim military architecture in this region of Asia. "You can easily spend several hours in these vast and colossal ruins surrounded by greenery.
