DERAWAR FORT
With its 40 bastions about 9 metres high, Derawar Fortress, planted in the middle of the Cholistan Desert, is visible several kilometres away. The first traces of a fort at this location, on this ancient trade route between Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, would date back some 5,000 years. The fortress was reportedly captured by a nawab of the Abassi family, who gave it its current form. The building is said to have been used as a neighbourhood by the Nawab army, where he himself had his residences. The remaining buildings all date from the 19th century and were evacuated by the Nawab family in 1920. Unfortunately, the interior of the fort is in poor condition and some walls are covered with graffiti. Just next to the fort is a magnificent white marble mosque, built in 1849 for the spiritual master of the Nawab. Ask for permission before visiting it.
