Ranikot fort is said to be one of the largest in the world. His story is mysterious. No one knows who built it or why it was built in this wild and almost deserted region. Some archaeologists believe that it was built by Arab conquerors who entered the subcontinent in the 8th century or by a Persian nobleman during the Abbasid domination in the 9th century. Others go back to the Sassanian dynasty (224-651). Its location is also a source of questioning. Why did you build such a massive defence fort in the middle of a region that was uninhabited at the time? Its walls, 6 to 10 metres high depending on the location, cover more than 20 kilometres through the desert hills and are reminiscent of the Great Wall of China. To access it, you will have to rent a 4x4. Also check with the PTDC Karachi office (+92 219202971) for information on security conditions.
