The building was reportedly built in the 17th century by Ali Sher Khan Anchan, who then ruled the region. Legend has it that the royal family also dug a secret underground tunnel that connected the fort to the city they used in wartime. The fort, which rises 1,400 metres above the town of Skardu, offers a breathtaking view of the valley, its villages, fields and forests, and the Indus River.
