Among the many small independent states that made up the northern regions in the 15th and 16th centuries, Hunza and Nager, located on either side of the Hunza River, were the two traditional rivals. In order to consolidate their power, the governors of these two states had several strongholds built, including the Baltit Fort, which eventually became the seat of power in Hunza State. Built on the summits of Karimabad for strategic reasons, the fort dominates the Ulter glacier and the valley. The imposing building with its finely carved wooden balconies served as a fortress and royal residence.
The rectangular fort is three stories high. The ground floor was mainly used to store provisions, while the first floor was a large open room. The second floor, used in winter, housed a courtroom, a guest room, a dining room, a kitchen and servants' quarters. The third floor, parts of which are outside, was more suitable for the hot months. There was a dining room, a courtroom, a bedroom and a reception room. It was not until 1945 that the Princes of Hunza finally abandoned the fort as a royal residence in favour of a palace below.
The building was remarkably restored by the Aga Khan Foundation in the late 1990s and is now in an admirable condition. The tour is organized by an exciting guide!
