Construction of the fort began in 1559, at the initiative of the rulers of the Chak dynasty who feared Mughal expansionism. Built on a massive rock surrounded by the Neelum River, which draws a "U"-shaped curve, the fort was to serve as a theatre for possible counter-offensives. Despite some efforts by the government, the fort is now in ruins.
