Saint-Hermès Cathedral, along with the eponymous parish, was founded in 1919 by Belgian missionaries of the Scheut Order, Adrien Nefkens and Edouard Polle, on a mission dating back to 1889. It was originally called "Nouvel-Anvers". It is an imposing building, housing the diocese of Lisala, and forming a remarkably well-preserved red-brick edifice. The cathedral's interior is spacious and bright, with a marble altar and several statues of saints. Saint Hermes was a Roman Christian martyr of the 2nd century.
