VAL DE LOIRE NATIONAL NATURE RESERVE
Nature reserve at La Charité, a place to discover the landscapes, flora, fauna and natural environments of the Loire Valley.
The superb Val de Loire National Nature Reserve covers 1,454 hectares, or 19 kilometers of river, including the Loire, its islands and banks. The exceptional value of this site has long been recognized by local residents, scientists and naturalists alike. In fact, this stretch of the Loire is the most representative not only of the landscape, but also of the flora, fauna and natural environments found along the 450 kilometers of the middle Loire between Nevers and Angers. In all, there are some twenty different natural environments. That's nearly 680 plant species and 1,100 animal species (130 of which are currently threatened with extinction). The Nature Reserve has a strong responsibility for 48 of these species, hosting a significant proportion of the national population, thanks to the presence of favorable and otherwise rare natural environments. The three "Milieu de Loire" trails enable visitors to get to know the river. To help you do this, events are regularly organized around the river. Last but not least, all the richness and beauty of this Val de Loire Nature Reserve is summed up in some fifteen panels, beautifully illustrated with watercolours by naturalist illustrator Benoît Perrotin. Take precautions during high water. Don't get too close to the eroded banks to avoid falling into the water. It would be a shame..
