Before becoming a preferred vacation destination for wealthy New Yorkers, Sag Harbor flourished for a long time as a whaling port. It is this aspect of its history that this museum, which houses the largest collection of whale-hunting artifacts in New York State, is dedicated to telling. The building in which the museum is located was built in 1845, when the whaling industry was at its height, by a wealthy fisherman.
