Montauk Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in New York State. Its construction began in 1792 under the presidency of George Washington. Just next door, the keeper's house, built in 1860, now houses a small museum dedicated to the history of the lighthouse and its operation. There is also a gallery on the former whaling industry in the region.
