Superb neo-Gothic church set in the shadow of an ancient fortification overlooking the town of Granard.
St Mary's is a beautiful neo-Gothic church with a cruciform plan, designed by John Burke in 1860 and modernised in the 1970s. It stands in the shadow of the highest motte-and-bailey in Ireland. Some 543 feet above sea level (165 m), this 12th-century fortification overlooks the town of Granard. On a clear day, you can see all seven surrounding counties. At least that's what the locals we met say.
