PUKHRAJ DURRY UDYOG
Artisanal durry stores, hand-woven rugs made from cotton, coconut fibre or camel wool
The Jodhpur region is famous for its handmade durry, a carpet woven on a handloom. The Prajapat family descends from a long line of weavers and still perpetuates this disappearing art. There are only about fifty families still practicing this craft in the traditional way. Most of the durries that you will find in the stores of Jodhpur are made on mechanical looms. In order to enable families living in remote villages to sell the fruits of their labor, the Prajapat family has set up a small durry cooperative. Pukhraj and his sons regularly collect the work from the different members of the cooperative and sell it to tourists passing through. The work presented is 100% guaranteed handmade, from cotton, coconut fiber or camel wool. Most of the dyes used are natural. Here, the carpets are made on a loom quite similar to that of the weaving of the fabric. Warp and weft threads are intertwined to guarantee a formidable solidity and to let appear two identical faces. It takes hundreds of hours to make a carpet, sitting at the loom in pairs, and can take up to several months depending on the size and complexity of the designs. Be sure to book this exciting tour if you are taking a trip to the Bishnese villages. It is also an opportunity to bring back a beautiful and original souvenir at a very reasonable price.
