OUR LADY OF MADHU SHRINE
The shrine of St. Mary of Madhu, lost in the heart of the jungle, is an important spiritual place for the Catholic community. The present church dates from 1872 and was badly damaged during the 1983-2009 conflict. During the fighting, the area around the building was home to up to 10,000 refugees. Our Lady of Madhu is famous for its statue of the Madonna, brought to the area in 1670 by fleeing Christians during their persecution by Dutch Protestants. This place of pilgrimage is very frequented, especially on July 2 and August 15.
