GAY HEAD LIGHTHOUSE
Lighthouse located at the end of the western point offering an endless view of the ocean and other Massachusetts islands in Aquinnah.
Gay Head lighthouse is known to be one of the best sunset spots on the island. Located at the very end of the western tip, it offers an endless view of the ocean and the other islands of Massachusetts (Elizabeth Island for example). In May 2015, the lighthouse was moved because the cliffs on which it was built are constantly eroding and retreating. It is now 40 metres further away, protected from erosion... at least for the next 150 years. When its construction was completed in 1799, it became the first lighthouse on the island.
