COMMUNAL PINACOTECA
Pinacoteca di Modigliana, located in Palazzo Pretorio
Housed in Palazzo Pretorio, a 14th century building, the Pinacoteca of Modigliana is dedicated to modern and contemporary Italian painting. It presents an extensive collection of paintings by Silvestro Lega (1826-1895), a native of the municipality, one of the leading representatives of the Italian macchiaioli pictorial movement. His artists advocated a return to realism in painting, working on strong contrasts of light and chiaroscuro effects. They painted in patches of colour, hence their name: macchia means stain.
