MOTA CASTLE
The most emblematic monument of Medina del Campo, housing one of the largest artillery parks in Europe
Declared a Site of Cultural Interest, La Mota Castle is the most emblematic monument in Medina del Campo. This medieval fortress, built of brick and flanked by a 40-metre-high keep, was once a strategic military centre, housing one of the largest artillery parks in Europe. It was also one of the places of residence of Joan the Mad, before serving as a prison for important figures such as Caesar Borgia, the Italian Renaissance lord made famous by Machiavelli in his famous political treatise The Prince.
