From the same Lima Norte terminal, you can reach Huacho by bus or colectivo, then Vegueta in a second colectivo. On the way, the vehicle can drop you off at the entrance to Vichama. Vichama is about 1 hour before Caral by car.
Located at Km 146 of the Panamericana Norte, Vichama is an agro-piscicultural town on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The site features two small, round, amphitheatre-like plazas and a labyrinthine main building with man-height adobe walls.
This is where you'll find the most expressive bas-reliefs along the walls, created 3,800 years ago. There's a frieze with relief carvings of dancing children holding their ribs, and a skull and crossbones depicting the famine endured by these civilizations. Above, the head of a toad, its two legs firmly planted on the ground, and a small canal symbolizing the return of water. More recently, another wall has been uncovered with new human faces and a kind of feeding mouth from which five roots spring. The whole is very well preserved and a powerful testimony to a civilization confronted with climate change and its upheavals.
It was also here in 2015 that three statuettes were found, whose photos have been seen around the world. One of them is a priestess or shaman whose breasts and sex are exposed. The other two are members of high society. Their age is consistent with that of the site, and reaffirms the power of women in these societies.
