It is one of the three main fire festivals in Japan. Taking place in the mountains of Kumano in Wakayama Prefecture, this festival celebrates the return of the deity who resides in the great Nachi Waterfall, the highest waterfall in Japan at 133 meters. This Shinto ritual sees many participants carrying giant flaming torches along a path to the sacred waterfall. There are 12 torches, each weighing almost 50 kg. They represent 12 deities living in the surrounding mountains.
