The Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine is the oldest structure in Kumano. The Seiganto-ji Buddhist temple was founded at the beginning of the 5th century. The Shinto temple Fudarakusan-ji is more recent. The shrine grouping the two temples is one of the three holiest temples of Kumano Sanzan along with the Hongu-taisha and Kumano Hayatama-taisha. It is located together with the pagoda and the Nachi no Otaki waterfall in Nachisan. This one, the highest in Japan, is the origin of the shrine.
