It was relocated and completely rebuilt after the great flood of 1889 when it was on the delta at the confluence of the Kumano-gawa and Otonashi-gawa rivers. Its architecture, repeatedly rebuilt after fires and the infamous flood, dates back 800 years. All pilgrimage routes from Kumano Kodo lead to this sanctuary which is now in the middle of mountains and dense forest conducive to serenity. This is the spiritual centre of Japan. The entrance is marked by the largest Torii in the world.
