All the pilgrimage routes of Kumano Kodo lead to this sanctuary nestled in the middle of mountains and dense forest, conducive to serenity. This is the spiritual center of Japan. The entrance is marked by the largest torii in the world. It takes about 1h20 by bus from Shingu station to reach it. Its architecture, which dates back 800 years, has been rebuilt many times and then moved after a destructive flood in 1889. The shrine as it stands dates back to 1891.
