KUMANO NACHI TAISHA GRAND SHRINE
To reach the great Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine in the best way, get off the bus at the Daimon-zaka stop. This lovely wooded path, amidst gigantic cedars and conifers, is well worth the detour. There are not many signs, but once on the path, there is no risk of getting lost. The sanctuary is located 600 metres further on. This paved path invites you to contemplate nature and it is easier to imagine the routes taken by the pilgrims. In the summer heat, this climb can be a little challenging. At the top of Mount Nachi is a complex of temples and shrines. It was once the meeting place of the Yamabushi, the ascetics of the mountain. The main shrine, one of the three major shrines of Kii-hanto, was established to pay homage to the kami (deity) of the Nachi-no-Otaki waterfall, the highest in Japan at 133 meters high and 13 meters wide. This waterfall is very famous in Japan and in the world, the image of the vermilion-red Nachiyama pagoda with the waterfall in the background is often used as a promotional tool for the region and the prefecture. And it is easy to see why. This natural and religious site is a flagship destination of Wakayama. Also on the site is the Seiganto-ji, to which the pagoda belongs. It is said to have been founded in the5th century by an Indian Buddhist priest. On good days, it is possible to see the Pacific Ocean to the south.
