SAN JACINTO BATTLEGROUND STATE HISTORIC SITE
Historic site with a gigantic 172 m high concrete obelisk, a museum and a site of the warship USS Texas.
This is a key site in Texas history. It was here that the decisive battle between independence troops and the Mexican army was fought on a spring afternoon in April 1836. This strip of coastal prairie resounded with the roar of cannons, musket shots and cries of "Remember the Alamo! "and again, "Remember Goliad! ". The army of General Sam Houston, the Tejanos and foreign volunteers decisively defeated the forces of General Antonio López de Santa Anna and won Texas independence. The conflict lasted a total of 18 minutes, of which Texans remain proud to this day. This 172-metre-high obelisk reminds us of that. Visit the website to see upcoming events. Here are the main attractions:
San Jacinto Monument. The gigantic concrete obelisk, 172 meters high and topped with a star, commemorates this founding event of Texas in 1939. You can take the elevator up to the observation platform, which sometimes breaks down...
A museum at the base of the monument provides a faithful account of the battle. A guided tour of the battlefield can also be arranged. There's also the Albert and Ethel Herzstein Library, where manuscripts can be viewed. Please note that the museum has special opening hours.
