FORTEZZA PISANA
A 12th century fortress with archaeological remains, weapons and documentation on falconry.
Despite its location in the hinterland, relatively protected from pirate incursions, Marciana did everything in its power to defend itself. Built in the 12th century under the Pisan Republic, this 415 m fortress has a rectangular plan with four bastions. In the event of a siege, a spring provided the water supply. The fortress enabled the inhabitants to take refuge and fight off invaders. The museum exhibits archaeological remains, medieval and Renaissance weapons and documentation on falconry.
