Beautiful beach located on the northeast coast of the island, only accessible by boat to Capraia
The beautiful Mediterranean landscapes of the island of Capraia and the mule tracks that cross it are particularly popular with hikers, who come here to observe endemic flora and rich fauna, including mouflon and crested cormorant. A protected site and partially open to visitors, this steep volcanic island of 19 square kilometres is almost devoid of trees, but strewn with valleys covered with luxuriant scrubland. The territory is mountainous and crossed by a 445-metre high ridge, Monte Castello. This former penal colony is now inhabited by about 400 islanders.
Not to be missed during your visit, the Cala della Mortola, located on the northeast coast of the island. This beautiful pebble and sand beach is, in fact, bathed by a sea with magnificent green and blue reflections. Please note that it is only accessible by boat, but fortunately there is a water taxi service from the port! Another idea of discovery is the picturesque path of Lake Stagnone, located at an altitude of 321 metres.
As far as accommodation is concerned, there are two options for sleeping on the island of Capraia: along the small port, lined with colourful houses, or in the old town, with its narrow streets and stairways, in the shade of the San Giorgio fort.
And how do you get to Capraia? You can get there daily all year round from the port of Livorno (2h45) with the Toremar shipping company (info: www.toremar.it - ✆ +49 611 14020).
