VISITA CAPRAIA
Go there and contact
Capraia, an unspoilt island in the Tuscan archipelago, lies between Livorno and the Argentario promontory
The magnificent Mediterranean landscapes of the island of Capraia and the mule tracks that cross it are particularly popular with hikers, who come here to observe endemic flora and a rich fauna, including mouflon sheep and crested cormorants. A protected site partially open to visitors, this steep volcanic island of 19 km2 is virtually treeless, but strewn with valleys covered in lush garrigue. The territory is mountainous and crossed by a 445 m-high ridge, Monte Castello. This former penal colony is now home to around 400 islanders.
Not to be missed is Cala della Mortola, on the island's northeast coast. This beautiful beach of pebbles and sand is bathed by a sea with magnificent green and blue reflections. Note that it is only accessible by boat, but fortunately a water cab service leaves from the port! Another idea is the picturesque path to Lake Stagnone, at an altitude of 321 m.
As far as accommodation is concerned, there are two options for sleeping on the island of Capraia: along the small harbor, lined with colorful houses, or in the old town with its narrow streets, alleys and staircases, in the shadow of Fort San Giorgio. There are no hotels, but plenty of Airbnb rentals.
And how do you get to Capraia? You can reach Capraia daily all year round from the port of Livorno (2h45), with the Toremar shipping company (info: www.toremar.it - ✆ +49 611 14020).
