ANELLO DELLO STAGNONE - MONTE LE PENNE
Island forming a real paradise for walking and nature lovers offering beautiful views on the west coast of the island
The island of Capraia is a real paradise for walkers and nature lovers. Among the various itineraries that criss-cross the island, the one called "Anello dello Stagnone - Monte Le Penne" is a must! However, it is better to be in good shape, as it takes about 4.5 hours of walking to cover the 12 kilometres of paths. Just like that, it's said!
Departing from the main - and only - village of Capraia, route no. 406, in a loop, first passes in front of the church of Santo Stefano, which dates back to the 11th century, then continues along route no. 409, which offers beautiful views of the west coast of the island, of Cala del Fondo and Punta del Fondo, with the Corsican mountains in the distance. The discovery continues with the small lake of Stagnone, located at an altitude of 321 metres. It is the only natural freshwater lake in the entire Tuscan archipelago. A peaceful place to observe the surrounding nature (and ideal for a picnic break!). Then continue to the spectacular Monte Le Penne, whose summit rises to 420 metres above sea level. There, a superb panorama, overlooking almost the whole island of Capraia, awaits you and will reward your efforts. On the way back to the village, number 402, you will come across the remains of the old prison of Capraia (Colonia Penale Agricola). This walk is even more beautiful in spring, when the island is in bloom. Last piece of advice, don't forget your bottle of water!
