BAGNO DI AGRIPPA
Site of exceptional historical value served as a golden prison to Prince Agrippa Postumo accused of homosexuality and debauchery
Remains of a Roman complex consisting of a villa, a theatre and baths. This site, of exceptional historical value, served as a "golden prison" for Prince Agrippa Postumo, nephew of Emperor Augustus. Accused of homosexuality and debauchery, Agrippa was exiled to the island of Pianosa between 7 and 14 AD. It was not until 1874 that an excavation campaign was organised under the tutelage of Gaetano Chierici, a great Italian archaeologist. Agrippa's villa was decorated with white and black mosaics on the ground, marble and decorations related to marine mythology.
