VISITA PIANOSA
Pianosa, a magnificent island also known as "the island of silence"
Formerly a penal colony until 1997, the island of Pianosa was once used for farming by the prisoners. Protected from pollution, its crystal-clear seabed is home to many prized species, including lobster. To safeguard this ecological heritage, tourist activity remains limited, but it is possible to stay at the Albergo Milena, the island's only hotel. On the other hand, access is easy, with authorized boats organizing daily excursions, mainly from the island of Elba. A small part of the area is freely accessible, while the rest can only be visited with a guide. In addition to fine sandy beaches and a transparent Caribbean sea, don't miss a visit to the vast catacombs dating back to Roman times, the 19th-century Palazzo della Specola and, of course, the Pianosa lighthouse on the east coast of Pianosa, which has been in operation since 1865.
For further information, please visit www.islepark.it and www.parcoarcipelago.info. Remember to book your guided excursions in advance. There are no stores on site and only one bar-restaurant.
To get to Pianosa, the Toremar company (www.toremar.it) departs every Tuesday from Rio Marina (on Elba Island) and Piombino (on the Tuscan coast). The Aquavision company (www.aquavision.it) makes the trip from Marina di Campo (on Elba Island) every day: departure at 10am, return at 6pm. This half-hour crossing is the shortest.
