VISITA PIANOSA

Island whose crystalline sea beds are populated with many appreciated animal species such as the lobster
Former prison colony until 1997, the island of Pianosa has known an agricultural activity thanks to the prisoners but it is now uninhabited. Protected from pollution, its crystalline seabed is inhabited by numerous animal species such as the lobster. To safeguard this ecological heritage, no tourist activity has been developed, so it is impossible to sleep there. On the other hand, access is easy with authorized boats that organize daily excursions, mainly from the island of Elba. A small part of the area is freely accessible, while the rest can only be visited with a guide. In addition to sandy beaches and a transparent Caribbean sea, the vast catacombs dating back to Roman times, the nineteenth century Palazzo della Specola and the Pianosa lighthouse, which has been active since 1865 and is located on the east coast of Pianosa, are not to be missed.
For more information, there are two websites to consult before your trip: www.islepark.it and www.parcoarcipelago.info. Remember to book your guided tours in advance. There are no stores and only one restaurant.
To get to Pianosa, the company Toremar (www.toremar.it) leaves every Tuesday from Rio Marina (on the island of Elba) and from Piombino (on the Tuscan coast). The Aquavision company (www.aquavision.it) runs the route from Marina di Campo (on Elba Island) every day: departure at 10am, return at 6pm. This half-hour crossing is the shortest.
