VICTORIA PEAK NATIONAL MONUMENT
A steep, rocky mass culminating at 1,120 m from which you can see the coast, the highest and 2nd highest in the country
The Cokscomb Mountains are a steep, rocky mass that can be seen from the coast. The highest of them, the second highest in the country, rises to 1,120 meters, far above your starting point, which is barely higher than the top of the waves. The February to May expedition season depends on the weather. In any case, it will take you 3 to 4 days to complete the 54 km round trip. Of course, you must be accompanied by a guide who will take care of the logistics (the Audubon Society can provide you with a list of certified guides in the area). Your first night will be spent at the park entrance. After that, you'll sleep in fully equipped camps (with cooking utensils). On the first day, you'll hike 20 or 30 kilometers, depending on your level of fitness. Jaguar tracks become visible as you move further away from civilization. If you reach the camp at km 30 (mile 19), you can cool off in the nearby waterfalls; the next day, you'll begin the ascent to the summit (part of which you'll have to climb with rope and harness), enjoying the view of the coastline on a clear day before returning to base camp, where you'll have left the bulk of your equipment. Then return on the third day, unless it takes you one or two more... But you'll have completed the most adventurous crossing in the country.
