VILLAGE DE RESTELICA
It is the southernmost village in Kosovo. It is also the most populated place in the Gora region with about 4,600 inhabitants (59% Gorans, 34% Bosnians, 3% Albanians and 1% Turks). Located at 1,717 m above sea level, Restelica does not have the charm of Brod. But the scenery is beautiful with Mount Gemitaš (2,183 m) next to it to the southeast. The village is also a good starting point for hikes on the Gora highlands, to Mount Karpa (2,125 m) or to Brod (3h walk). But Brod and Restelica are not directly connected by road: by car, you have to go through Dragaš/Dragash (one hour drive). Restelica is not connected to North Macedonia either: the road continues for 16 km south to the border, but only a crosswalk reserved for the inhabitants has been open since 2021. It allows Kosovar Gorans to visit Macedonian Gorans in the villages of Jelovjane and Urvič. In Restelica, most of the inhabitants have a pastoral activity and sell šar cheese. But since 1999, a whole part of the men leaves to work several months of the year in Italy or in Germany to support their families. This influx of money has resulted in new buildings in the village, including the two large mosques with double minarets that dominate a large complex of houses with orange tiles. You will find several restaurants here. But we especially recommend the one at the Jeliće Hotel.
