MUSÉE DES MARTYRS DE LA FAMILLE BERISHA
This memorial (Muzeu i martirëve të Familjes Berisha, Muzej mučenika porodice Beriša) is installed in the pizzeria where 44 members of the Albanian Berisha family were killed on 26 March 1999, during the Kosovo war. Four other members of the family were killed in their home on the same day. This massacre of 48 people, including 16 children, was committed three days after the beginning of the NATO bombing by about 15 Serbian policemen and inhabitants of Suhareka/Suva Reka. The scene of the tragedy has been left untouched, after two grenades exploded and automatic weapons were fired, leaving only three survivors. While the walls are blackened and riddled with shrapnel, the fake Roman columns that served as the restaurant's decor remain, and on the floor are some of the victims' belongings, including the baby bottle of Redon Berisha, who died here at the age of 22 months. The Berishas were targeted because they were the wealthiest family in Suhareka/Suva Reka and had just hosted foreign OSCE monitors of the belligerents. In 2014, four of the perpetrators of the massacre were sentenced by a special court in Serbia to twenty, fifteen and thirteen years in prison, but the main defendant was acquitted. Among the survivors, Shyhrete Berisha, born in 1965, meanwhile, testified in 2002 at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague, Netherlands, against Slobodan Milošević.
