SAINT DEMETRIOS CHURCH
This Serbian Orthodox church (Црква Светог Димитрија/Crkva Svetog Dimitrija, Kisha e Shën Dhimitrit) overlooks North Mitrovica. Built in 2001-2005, and consecrated in 2010, it is dedicated to the patron saint of the city, St. Demetrios of Thessaloniki, from whom the name Mitrovica is derived (the city was originally called Dimitrovica). The building, of Serbian-Byzantine inspiration with five domes and flanked by a bell tower, has become the main Serbian Orthodox place of worship since the church of St. Sava became isolated in the southern part of Mitrovica.
