MAINE STATE HOUSE
Maine Capitol with a newly redone bronze dome topped by a gold statue of wisdom
The dome of the Maine Capitol has just been refurbished to its original bronze color. It is topped by a gilded statue of Wisdom. In her hand, she holds a pinewood torch and a pine cone, symbolizing the State of Maine. The foundation stone was laid in 1829, two years after Augusta was granted state capital status. Construction was entrusted to architect Charles Bulfinch, author of the Massachusetts Capitol. The building was extensively remodeled in 1911, when it was enlarged.
