CHARTREUSE NOTRE DAME DU VAL SAINT-JEAN DE BASSEVILLE
This Charterhouse is located in the hollow of the Yonne valley, in the natural and wild site of the rocks of Basseville
In the hollow of the Yonne valley, in the natural and wild site of the rocks of Basseville and along the Nivernais canal, appears the Chartreuse Notre-Dame du Val Saint-Jean. The entire property has been listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments since 1927, and dates back to 1328 for its oldest buildings.
Since 2010, and with the help of the DRAC and the Regional Council of Burgundy, the current owner has been carrying out a long and patient work of restoration and enhancement of the buildings and the garden, with the aim of recovering the original identity of the Charterhouse, which was occupied for nearly 450 years by the monks. With the creation of a conservatory orchard, honey hedges and a vegetable garden "hortus conclusus" (closed garden of the Middle Ages), the garden will gradually regain its original function. The Chartreuse is open to visitors in the summer.
Please note that during the year 2019-2020, the monks' building being under construction, the Chartreuse garden will not be open to the public.
