ROMITORIO DI SAN FRANCESCO SAVERIO
Former hermitage dedicated to the Spanish missionary Francisco Javier, who was one of the co-founders of the Society of Jesus.
Built in the 16th-17th centuries, this hermitage is dedicated to Francisco Javier, a Spanish missionary who travelled to India, Malaysia and Japan, where he celebrated the country's first baptism. Beatified in 1619, he was canonized three years later by Gregory XV. Now in ruins, the structure consisted of a chapel and elegant architectural elements, such as a precious masonry altar. The hermitage was inhabited in the 18th century by hermits wearing the traditional black tunic.
