PIEVE DI SAN GIOVANNI
A parish church in the middle of nature, which represents the largest religious building of the Romanesque period still standing on the island of Elba.
Immersed in nature, this parish church, situated halfway up Monte Perone, above the villages of San Piero and Sant'Ilario, is the largest religious building of the Romanesque period still standing on the island of Elba. Dating from the second half of the 12th century, the whole building is made of granite ashlars (a quarry still in operation is located nearby). Similar to other churches on the island, its architecture consists of a single rectangular nave with the end of the semicircular apse.
